Wellness in the Workplace: Paycom’s People-First Culture

Bonny Calfy | May 3, 2024

At Paycom, we don’t just say our people are our most valuable resource.

We demonstrate this belief with a caring culture that supports the whole employee — both professionally and personally.

Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of a workplace wellness program and the tools and resources Paycom gives its team members to thrive.

The benefits of workplace wellness

According to the CDC, healthy employees not only have better quality of life, but they also benefit from having a lower risk of disease, illness and injury, as well as increased work productivity and a greater likelihood of contributing to their communities.

Yet less than half of full-time U.S. workers have access to mental health-related benefits or programs from their employer, according to an April 2024 Paycom survey of 2,200 full-time U.S. employees.

And while nearly 75% experienced at least one mental health-related problem in the past year, only 40% have received mental health care.

Barriers to care still stand in employees’ way, despite 70% believing they would benefit from receiving regular mental health care. In the same study:

  • 49% cited finances as the most significant obstacle to accessing mental health-related care
  • 35% reported difficulty finding time in their schedules to access mental health-related care

The perks and wellness resources that make a difference

Finding an organization that offers impactful health benefits isn’t always easy, but when they do, they stand out.
Paycom recognizes that many factors contribute to employee wellness, which is why we’re proud to provide:

  • $1-per-pay-period individual health insurance
  • $0 copay for in-network therapy and counseling
  • low-cost, comprehensive vision and dental coverage
  • on-campus well-being advisors offering confidential mental health and wellness resources
  • on-site interfaith spaces
  • access to green spaces and weekly companywide guided meditation sessions
  • on-site fitness centers with classes, intramural leagues and state-of-the-art equipment
  • financial well-being resources such as generous 401(k) matching and an employee stock purchase plan
  • subsidized $4 catered lunches from local eateries at our corporate campuses

Cultivating community and wellness in the workplace

A Harvard Business Review survey of nearly 1,500 employees found that when they had a sense of community at work, they were:

  • 58% more likely to thrive at work
  • 55% more engaged
  • 66% more likely to stay with their organization

They also “experienced significantly less stress and were far more likely to thrive outside of work,” according to the survey.

Paycom strives to create a culture of wellness through holistic benefits for team members, but we don’t stop there. We also provide many outlets for employees to cultivate community and connect outside their day-to-day responsibilities. Here are a few examples:

  • Paycom’s 11 employee resource groups (ERGs) foster opportunities for team members to reflect, share, connect, learn and create a more welcoming workplace.
  • Our in-person work environment and team-building activities empower employees to build connections and create lasting friendships in the workplace.
  • Outdoor green spaces and walking trails at our Oklahoma City and Grapevine campuses promote both physical and mental health by providing safe spaces to gather and connect outdoors.
  • Free, on-site fitness centers for team members in Oklahoma City and Grapevine support different interests and activity levels. Our intramural leagues and group classes are a great way to meet people from different departments.
  • We embrace continuous learning and improvement by offering team members a variety of professional development opportunities and leadership training programs.

Driving meaningful work

Over the past 30 years, Americans have come to identify meaningfulness as the single most important aspect of a job — ahead of income, job security and the number of hours worked — according to research from McKinsey & Company.

Every single day, Paycom pursues a mission of empowering employees with their own data and simplifying life for HR and payroll professionals. Our team members make a direct, positive impact on real people, continually finding solutions to complex problems and setting the standard in the HR tech industry.

Paycom is proud to provide our people with a strong mix of benefits, community, purposeful work and unlimited possibilities for growth. It’s how we show our employees we truly care.
