Redefining HR Excellence: Celebrating 25 Years of Paycom

Abraham Mendieta | November 16, 2023

Three decades ago, human resources looked a lot different. Manual processes and paper-based systems were the norm, with not one smartphone to be found.

The industry needed innovation, a leader capable of reshaping the HR landscape and priming it for the 21st century — and that’s what Paycom delivered.

This year, Paycom celebrates a monumental 25 years in the HR technology space. With our dynamic history, people-first culture and astronomical growth, we have a lot to celebrate.

Here’s how we got to where we are today.

A foundation of innovation

Established in 1998 by Chad Richison, our visionary founder and CEO, Paycom planted its roots in Oklahoma City, a place we still proudly call home. Paycom was one of the first companies to process payroll entirely online. But the innovation didn’t stop there.

In 2011, with rapid growth of our workforce, Paycom opened its freestanding corporate headquarters in Oklahoma City. After a few more years of office openings (and ISO certifications), Paycom went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “PAYC” in 2014.

Since then, we’ve consistently pushed the envelope in HR tech, expanding sales branches nationwide and joining the prestigious S&P 500 in 2020. In 2021, Paycom further reinforced its commitment to innovative HR tech with the launch of Beti®, an industry-first tool that empowers employees to do their own payroll.

A culture built by people, for people

At the heart of Paycom’s success? Our people. We’re proud to cultivate a dynamic culture where team members can thrive — one that encourages continuous learning, giving back to the community and fostering an inclusive work environment.

Our values define who we are as a company:

  • We innovate.
  • We win.
  • We care.
  • We serve.
  • We believe.

And we know we’re only successful when our people have room to flourish.

This belief in our employees is reflected in the benefits we offer, which include:

  • $1-per-pay-period individual health insurance
  • comprehensive dental and vision coverage
  • robust 401(k) plans with matching
  • paid family leave
  • employee stock purchase plan

We like to have fun, too. From macro-level events like National Payroll Week and holiday celebrations to team-specific activities like philanthropy fairs and zoo visits, camaraderie is essential to our culture.

In fact, our commitment to a people-first workplace has garnered awards like Newsweek’s America’s Greatest Workplace for Parents and Families, Comparably’s Best Career Growth and Best Company Culture, and more.

Paving new paths forward

From our inception in 1998 to our role as an industry leader today, growth remains integral to Paycom’s success.

Whether we’re opening facilities and sales offices, adding team members, expanding our software tools or amplifying our philanthropic efforts, Paycom’s growth has been steady and rapid. This is reflected in our partnerships and sponsorships as well, from our work with pro golfer Viktor Hovland to the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award and even Paycom Center in downtown OKC.

At a time when the tech world is volatile, Paycom’s presence remains a stabilizing force in the industry. We’re laser-focused on equipping people with tools and technology that simplifies and enhances their lives, and we’re continuing to move the HR industry forward with offerings like Beti, Global HCM™, Direct Data Exchange® and more.

For a quarter century, Paycom has blazed trails for the HR tech industry, and we have no plans of slowing down. Here’s to the next 25 years — and the 25 after that.
